Ring Lost and Found
Second ring returned... Chickquetia (Curry) Sohriakoff
Richard D. Castro, Sequoia class of 1955, was searching on eBay and came across a 1949 Sequoia class ring. Having lost his own almost 30 years ago,
he presumed the ring may belong to someone who may have lost it. Alas he was the winning bidder. At that time, he contacted the Sequoia Alumni Network,
but the site was not set up to deal with finding such persons.(Stolden several years ago. Found December 2002, returned December 2003) After Richard heard of Garret's ring being returned, he thought he would try again. Sure enough, we were able to help him contact Chickquetia (Curry) Sohriakoff, through her grandson, at first. Chickie's ring was delivered to her at 4:55 pm on December 5th, per USPS. The ring was sent Priority mail with insured mail. Ring found... Garret Rosslow
(Lost ca. 1959. Found November 2003) Garret and his girlfriend, Sandy
Lowrey, met as students at Sequoia. Sandy moved to San Jose in her Junior
year. Garret graduated
from Sequoia in 1958. They went “steady” in
1959. It was common for the girl to wear the boy’s ring. Tape was wrapped
around the bottom of the ring to adjust for the size difference. While playing
in the surf, off the Santa Cruz Boardwalk, she lost the ring. They spent some
time checking the surf line, but it was gone! Fast forward 44 years... Lee Wiese of Milpitas does Metal detecting as a hobby. On the weekend of November 8-9, 2003, he was beach in Santa Cruz and found a high school ring from Sequoia High School with the same emblem as the school.
At 9:43 a.m., an e-mail was sent out to to our e-mail list and by noon, the owner of the ring was identified, found and contacted. In the next days, Lee and Garret contacted each other to make arrangements for Lee to return the ring. On November 16, Lee and Garret met in Santa Cruz and the ring was returned. Garret and Sandy were married in 1960 and have three children and four grandchildren. They have lived in the Santa Cruz area since 1970. Lee had found the ring within 100 yards of where Garret and Sandy had lost it 44 years ago!
